Research:
For my research on this project of: Advertising and Promotion with photography, and video I looked at a variety of different subjects / topics which were: Photography in Advertising, Messages in Advertising, Political and Social Advertising Campaigns, Information Graphics, Typographers, Advertising Genres, and Mise en Scene.
For Photography in Advertising page, I looked at how photography is one of the most important roles within advertising campaigns. Also, with the photo being the centre piece of the advert, many company's spend a few hours creating the perfect title and body of text for the said object the company is referring too. I also researched that many of these photo adverts can be on a variety of medium such as billboards, in magazines, in print, on posters and even on flyers.
On the Messages in Advertising page, I looked at how some adverts contain hidden messages, and meanings inside a standard ordinary advert. As seen in the Fed Ex, logo there is a hidden arrow in between the D and the X. Another hidden message is in the bar of Toblerone, where there is a bear in the mountain.
Also, the subliminal messages in Advertising, can be found anywhere ie: TV adverts, in magazines, movies, and even in children's comic books.
The Political and Social Campaigns for Advertising was quite interesting. Here I learned that in politics, campaign advertising is rather important as these can be mass produced through newspapers, radio, and TV.
In the Advertisements and InfoGraphics page, I looked into that of advertising in business is a form of marketing communication used to either encourage, persuade, or even manipulate an audience. For InfoGraphics, I looked at a variety of InfoGrpahics like that of an image of choosing the correct typeface, Halloween in the United States by the Numbers, and 5 1/2 best twitter practises.
The Typographer’s research I found to be really interesting and also quite enjoyable. I looked at 9 typographers, which I was happy about looking into each typographer. I found some really interesting people and that there work was really fascinating.
I really liked the way I was free to research any typographer I wanted which was really interesting.
For the Advertising Genres page I looked at the different genres like that of: Modern, Humorous, Pastiche, Controversial, Seductive, Public Service Announcement.
I aslo looked at the traditional types of advertising like: Print Advertising; newspapers, magazines, brochures and flyers
Billboards; Kiosks, Trade shows and Events, Radio and TV Advertising.
I then looked at the more modern versions of advertising and theses were:
Online Advertising, Covert Advertising - Advertising in Films, Surrogate Advertising - Advertising indirectly, Public Service Advertising - Advertising for Social Causes.
I then researched into what the future for advertising would be and these were:
Digital Signage, Smartphone Advertising, Niche Advertising, and also User-Generated Advertising

Technical Skills:
On my Technical Skills page I looked at Day of the Dead, which was very interesting and also very enjoyable.
For this me and my group chose to recreate a video of Day of the Dead, we researched a vast amount of information on this traditional festival, and we also looked at an array of images of other people portraying their own attempt of Day of the Dead. I did think we had some influence from looking at other people's work.
On this task however, we had to create the story / scene, and create the full face make-up.
For the shoot we took some still shots of our subject with the flower crown, full face make-up and a skull on top of the flower crown. We then moved onto the celebration of someone that has passed. After this, we created a short video clip of our work and presented to the class. Overall we got good feedback from the rest of the group, which our group was pleased with.
Another technical skill was knowing the different editing terms, which a keen editor should be educated on. These terms could either be known to mean transitions or simply the continuity. These terms ranged from: Cutting, Shot / Reverse shot, Eye Line Match, Dissolve, Super-Imposition, Slow Motion and others in between.

Samples / Test Pieces:
The Samples / Test Pieces I did were mainly just to test out if the lighting was correct / needed to be changed, I think that the things that went successfully were how we made our model pose with the variety of props we had. I think that what worked best was the chopsticks in the hair, the Hello Kitty teddy wearing a KImono and that our model was wearing a very interesting costume which looked really nice with the given props.
Initial Ideas:
My first initial idea for the Advertising and Promotion task came together by the use of mind mapping, in which I made a mind map of all the chosen World Cultures I could possibly do recreate form. I then looked at these World Cultures and then narrowed it down. I took more interest into Egyptian, Urban Legends and Dark Fairy Tales and the main one being Japanese.
Egyptian:
I thought that the Egyptian World Culture would have been a really interesting and unique piece to create. Seen as I had been to Egypt I thought that I would know a little more into their Culture, and that I could bring that across in my video. I have some Egyptian scarves from when I went, so I thought I could use these maybe as a background for the video / pictures.
Urban Legends:
I also thought that this would be a very unusual Culture to do, as I think that you could probably do so many things within the Urban Legends category. For mine however, I would have chosen something like Bloody Mary, or the Japanese Urban Legend of Toire no Hanako-San, who is a famous urban legend in Japan with elementary schools.

Japanese:
I chose to do Japanese as my final idea as I think that their culture is a fabulous culture. I think that the Japanese are very interesting and have some very interesting techniques, games, food, clothes, language, music and many more.
I researched into:
Japanese Painting: The Japanese painting is a very popular form of art celebrated through out the country. The outstanding procedure of the painting is borrowed from continental regions.
Japanese Language: The language of Japan is one of the most eminent elements of Japanese culture. This language includes a polysynthetic linguistic process and is featured by a distinctive lexical pitch modulation. The written form of this language is very interesting as the Japanese scripts are combination of various types of scripts as Roman Alphabets, Chinese Characters.
Japanese Sculpture: Japanese Sculptures are the reflection of Shinto as well as Buddhist cultural heritage. Stone, metal, pottery and wood are considered as the favoured materials for sculpting.
I also researched into many other sub categories in the Japanese area, like the Japanese tea ceremony, Temples / Castles, Games, Food and a few others. I found that researching these was an even bigger insight into the Japanese Culture, I then thought about how me and my other partner for this project would create something to recreate some photos into a Japanese theme.
Our plan for these unique photos were:
The plan for this project is we will use a student that we know as we think that she would be very suitable for out Japanese theme of Grunge, Pastel and Kawaii, here we are thinking of having her in pig tails/buns and having black/red lipstick. We were also thinking of using white face paint and we also were thinking of using normal make-up too.
For the clothes, we think that our chosen "model" has some very unique clothing so I think we would just brief her, on what sort of clothing we are looking for this would be: mostly black clothing really and with little hints of colour in the lipstick and maybe in the clothes, she also normally wears chokers which would look very nice with it too.
For props, I brought in my Studio Ghibli DVDs, and I was thinking of bringing in an empty bottle of Sake and my black / red lipstick.
Since I'm working in a group my other half is bringing in her Kimono, and red / peach lipstick.
For the background, we were thinking of the white and black background to get interesting photographs in portrait mode. We also thought about creating a "Making of" video too. For this we were thinking of showing how we used the lighting, what settings on the camera we are using, and how we got the final outcome of our projection.

Idea Development:
For my idea development I simply made mind maps then I decided what World Culture I wanted to recreate in a projection format. I then landed at three different Cultures. I then brain stormed which World Culture would be the best to recreate. I settled on Japanese to be my final outcome. I then came to this decision because I thought that the Japanese Culture has so much versatility and I can create a story with the added help of my other group. I developed my ideas even further by researching the Culture I wanted to project and then writing down what I could recreate, how and what techniques I could use.
For Egyptian:
I researched the culture then decided on what particular part within the Egyptian Culture I could recreate. I then settled recreating Cleopatra with my black Egyptian Scarf with Anubis on it in Gold. I think that this could look very interesting with the make-up and correct costume.
For Urban Legends:
I thought about creating maybe bloody Mary, as I think it would look quite interesting in a projection. However, I did then think that it would be a little too strange maybe and that it wouldn’t fit right in with the brief.
For Dark Fairy Tales:
I thought about creating the whole original story – fairy-tale of The Little Mermaid. I thought that this would be really interesting, as I doubt most people have heard of the original story. I thought that it was a beautiful story and that more people would need to hear it. I then researched a lot into the story.
For Japanese:
I thought of creating a series of images with different props and hopefully make up. I think that with our shots we would use some chopsticks to fit in with the theme of Japan, I also brought in my Hello Kitty teddy, which was wearing a Kimono. I think overall our shots were really intriguing and very unique.

Design Development:
I arrived at my final design by thinking of what what / could work well with the chosen World Culture of Japan. I knew that I was going to create a Japanese style photo series, I think that these photos would look very interesting, quirky and would definitely show the Japanese Culture off well. To get to the stage of my final piece I took a variety of photographs of my chosen model (Charlotte). I then put these photos into Photoshop, and I edited them so that the brightness was up just a little bit more so that the background looked fully white. When the photos were portrait however, we decided to have three photos of that one image, this was so that the images looked more interesting than if there was just one photo on its on.
To create our projection, we put our chosen edited photos into Premiere Pro, and set them out into a sequence which we thought looked the best.

Final Outcome:
In my final outcome I used only two programmes, which were Premiere Pro and Photoshop. I used Photoshop to edit my photo series, to make the background become white and not noticeable within my shots, and to add a bit more brightness into the photo itself. When I had finished editing my chosen photos from Photoshop, I imported them into Premiere Pro.
To create our projection we imported the images into a …… screen, and to put our photos into a suitable sequence so it could be watched easily.
I think that creating a suitable layout for this projection was rather easy as there was a limited number of photos of around 8 therefore it was quite easy to create a suitable enough layout. I am quite pleased how the photo series turned out, however I think it would’ve looked far more interesting if it was created into a video.

Summary:
Throughout this projection I think that I have learnt a bit more into a world culture like of Japan and Day of the Dead. I also think that one of my strengths was researching a lot of information from the world cultures like that of Japan, and even that of Day of the Dead. I think that this was a strength because I like to know new things about the World and knowing these bits of information really helped with my work.
I think that my weaknesses throughout this project would have been probably that I didn’t go with my instinct and create a video of our Japanese theme. I believe that a video would probably be a lot more interesting than just a series of photos.
I think to improve for the next project I think I would need to improve on my knowledge of certain programmes and get to know the software a little more and get the confidence with it. I also would like to know more into better terminology.
Overall, I think what has pleased me most about my work was again, looking at typographers’ work and knowing who influenced them, and how they came to their chosen career path.
