Dia de Muertos - Day of the Dead:
For our technical skill, my group and I looked at creating a short video on Day of the Dead.
Here we researched a vast amount of information on Day of the Dead, and found that our this interesting festival was quite extraordinary, we also looked at an array of images of other people portraying their version of Day of the Dead. I think we got a lot of influence from these images.
Firstly, we had to create the Scene:
Myself and another party of my group created our scene in the dark room, which would be a sacred burial ground, we drew sugar skulls on the black wall in different colours of chalk to add a pop of colour into our images.
We also put some skulls around the black faux leather sofa, which you would be able to see hopefully in our shots, we also added some very interesting flowers around the skulls and sofa where hopefully the UV light would pick up the flowers and change there colour.
Full Face Make-up:
For our make up on this task, one of our other members put the face-paint onto another member of our group. This was quite fascinating to see in action, as there was referencing to another image of Day of the Dead, make-up. I believe that our make-up was really outstanding for all in a day's work.
Shoot:
For our shoot, we took some still portraits of our main subject (Charlotte), with the flower crown, full face make-up, and a skull just at the top of head on top of the flower crown. As you can see below, our images are quite striking and more or less speak for themselves. I think that our photos came out really well, and look excellent too.
Then we moved onto actually celebrating the life of someone who has passed, here this was me, I was laid on sofa with the flowers and skulls around me, I thought that this was quite a fun process however, trying to look dead and still like was quite tough. I had to keep my eyes shuts which was a little tricky, but in the end we got the desired shot.
We then moved onto creating a small video to present to our class. This was a selection of videos that we had shot while taking our photographs, these were videos of our main subject slowly moving her head, moving her body, then it was mostly of the UV flowers, twisting and falling. Near the end of the video you notice still images of that of Charlotte, in various poses ie: UV flowers in hand and different lighting. Other photos include: Charlotte looking into the UV flowers, the set up of the 'burial' where you can mostly see the UV flowers and skulls.

The Presentation:
For our presentation, we had to produce a little information about Day of the Dead, to our peers and show them the work that we had created in this day. Below is our information on Dia de Muertos:
The day of the dead is a holiday celebrated in the central and Southern parts of Mexico, during November the 1st and 2nd. They believe that the gates of heaven are opened at midnight on October 31st, and that the spirits of all the deceased children are allowed to reunite with their families for 24 hours. On November the 2nd, the spirits of the adults come down to enjoy the festivities that are prepared for them.
In most Indian Villages, beautiful altars are created in each home, they are then decorated with candles, buckets of flowers, mounds of fruit, peanuts, plates of turkey mole, stacks of tortillas and a big "Day of the Dead" bread.
On the afternoon of November the 2nd, the festivities are then taken to the cemetery. People clean tombs, play cards, listen to the village band and remember their loved ones.
We were meant to base this around a story that is a real story or one that we had made up, however I found that there was a Children's Story on Day of the Dead. I found that this story was really unique, quite sad and yet really powerful and it was just a children's story. I think we based some of our work from this story as the one sisters makes an altar for her deceased sister to find her way back for The Day of the Dead, celebrations.
